Job Description – Watershed Health Specialist, NM Forestry Division

Purpose of Position: This position will assist the Forest and Watershed Health Coordinator with implementation of the New Mexico Forest and Watershed Health Plan, with particular attention to improving forest and watershed health through partnerships. The position serves primarily as a liaison forester to the Natural Resources Conservation Service, but interfaces with other agencies as well.

The position will provide technical expertise in forestry and watershed management. The position will assist with the alignment of management objectives and priorities across jurisdictions (local, state, tribal, federal), and will help integrate efforts on state and private lands with efforts on other jurisdictions. The position will also assist with the alignment of funding from different sources. The position will develop instruments such as agreements and work plans that foster cooperative relationships, and will help cooperating entities align methodologies, standards, specifications, protocols and/or procedures, where needed and applicable to carry out the agreements.

This position will conduct activities that support landscape-scale watershed restoration and forest health projects as well as other priorities in New Mexico's Statewide Natural Resource Assessment and Strategies/Forest Action Plan. This position will promote projects that take into account the overall condition and resiliency of ecosystems, including vegetation diversity and structure, water quality and quantity, soil stability, wildlife diversity and habitat, and contributions to ecosystem services.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in Forestry, Range Management, Forest Management, Natural Resources, Wildlife Science, Fire Science or Ecology and three (3) years of experience in Forestry, Range Management, Forest Management, Natural Resources, Wildlife Science, Fire Science and/or Ecology. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling seven (7) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Salary: $14.68 - $26.11 hourly / $30,534 - $54,308 annually
