About Joule

Joule is advancing a technology platform for Liquid Fuel from the Sun™, expected to eclipse the scale, productivity and cost efficiency of any known alternative to fossil fuel today. Its transformative Helioculture™ platform can directly and continuously convert sunlight and waste CO2 to infrastructure-ready diesel, ethanol or commodity chemicals with no dependence on biomass feedstocks, downstream processing or precious natural resources. Joule has successfully pilot-tested its platform for over two years and initiated operations at its SunSprings™ demonstration plant. Joule is privately held and has raised over $160 million in funding to date. The company is headquartered in Bedford, Massachusetts with operations in Leander, Texas; Hobbs, New Mexico; and The Hague, The Netherlands. Plant Technician/Bioprocess Associate

The Operator/ Plant Technician will be responsible for carrying out a variety of operations at Joule’s Hobbs, NM facility.  Tasks include general operation and maintenance of outdoor bioreactors, following standard operating procedures, performing specific experimental work including sampling and culturing of bacteria.  Much of the work will be done on smaller scale bioreactor units used for developmental and demonstration purposes.  This person will be a part of the Hobbs team and will be conducting work to inform the development, design, and construction of larger scale bioreactor units.  They will be expected to record data and observations in a clear and detailed manner.

Responsibilities

Perform clean in place (CIP) and sterilization protocols.

Read, understand, and execute standard operating procedures as well as experimental procedures.

Perform basic mechanical assembly of bioreactors and maintenance (the ability to “turn a wrench”).

Operation of pumps, heat exchangers, and other process equipment.

Proper sterile, “clean” sampling technique.

Basic microbiology techniques including plating and culturing of bacteria.

Qualifications

This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, or related Engineering discipline and 0-2 years of relevant industrial experience.  The position is interdisciplinary with basic understanding required of bioprocessing and biology.  The position is very hands on and the candidate must have good mechanical aptitude (can turn a wrench) and needs to be self-motivated and able to work with little supervision. Basic microbiology lab techniques are necessary, but can be learned with minimal training.  Effective verbal and written communication skills are a required given the need to continually exchange information with a variety of interdepartmental groups.
