Poll shows New Mexicans oppose a Gila River Diversion project
SILVER CITY >> A recent poll by an independent research firm shows that many New Mexicans oppose a Gila River diversion project. The poll, conducted in late June of this year by Public Opinion Strategies, a Republican political and public affairs research firm, was commissioned by Protect the Flows, an organization that opposes such projects. Five hundred voters statewide were contacted, with an extra concentration on the five southwest counties nearest the Gila River - Grant, Luna, Hidalgo, Sierra and Dona Ana Counties.

American Water Resources Association Healthy Forests = Healthy Waters Conference Abstracts
The AWRA Conference, titled "Healthy Forests = Healthy Waters", is accepting abstracts until FEBRUARY 8, 2013. The conference itself will be held June 27-28, 2013. The conference sessions will be relevant to water managers, aquatic biologists/ecologists, planners, engineers, forestland managers, economists, consultants, water purveyors and industrial users of water.

The objective of the conference is to offer a professional forum on the latest issues concerning the research, policy, and application of establishing environmental flows.

A new book that examines water management in the chronically water-short Israeli-Palestinian region, and Arizona, which relies significantly on the overallocated Colorado River, as well as on non-renewable groundwater supplies. This volume is predicated on the idea that scientifically-trained experts who are sensitive to sociopolitical conditions can assist in developing and evaluating feasible water management solutions.

Urban Waters Restoration Grant (National Fish & Wildlife Foundation)
The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation has announced a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the Urban Waters Restoration Grants. The grant program seek to develop community capacity to sustain local natural resources for future generations by providing modest financial assistance to diverse local partnerships for wetland, forest, riparian and coastal habitat restoration with a particular focus on urban/community waters and watersheds.

In June, Audubon New Mexico completed a reader-friendly brochure on environmental flows restoration. Titled "Hanging in the Balance: Why our rivers need water and why we need healthy rivers," it includes information on environmental flows, the economic benefits of health rivers to New Mexico, and an overview on a recent EPA-funded study about which rivers in the state are most in need of environmental flows restoration. The brochure also details two collaborative projects currently underway as well as recommendations for restoring elements of natural flow patterns to New Mexico's rivers.
